[ and just like that they’re off on the Adventure of a Lifetime. they make their way out of Shujin and down to the train station.

[ the station, as always, is buzzing with students and other passerby going about their daily commutes; the two of them cram their way onto the next train car. good luck trying to find a place to sit down though by the way, it’s probably not gonna happen. still, Ryuji scans the area around them to see if by some miracle there does happen to be a few open seats. nope. sorry. Ryuji seems a bit annoyed by that, but he'll live. maybe.

[ aside from the ambience of the train itself coupled with the droning of a news anchor on the tv overhead, it’s fairly silent in the cab. eerily silent. even Ryuji is quiet, or as quiet as Ryuji can be at least, for the duration of the trip.

[ they’ll make a quick transfer in Shinjuku before arriving at their final destination: Ogikubo (cheers). luckily they don’t have much further to walk as the shop is fairly close to the station. Ryuji excitedly exits, stretching out his limbs after the long ride. ]

Whew! Alright! We’re finally here! And just in time too looks like. Usually the line's waaay longer.

[ the building itself is rather modest and unassuming. the boys take their place in the line; Ryuji propping himself up against a neighboring building to take the weight off his bad leg. hopefully they’ll get in rather quickly though. they’ve still got a bit of time to shoot the breeze before Ryuji becomes too preoccupied with slurping down some noodles though.

Gansey may want to make the most of this opportunity. ]

[Normally, Gansey would fill the silence that they experienced on the train (probably with some talk on Glendower - Ryuji has thus far been spared this), but as he's never been to Japan before, he spent the ride trying to pick up on the Japanese that the newscaster was speaking. It's a language that is entirely foreign to him, and while he wouldn't consider himself a linguist, he does find that sort of thing interesting. Aside from that, some of the news had seemed concerning, though he couldn't tell why (something about a subway crash), and that had led to some googling on his phone. Before he knows it, the ride has come to an end, and he is none the wiser to what's going on in Tokyo. But he doesn't want to potentially dampen the mood with bringing it up, so instead, as they are waiting in line and he notices Ryuji leaning against the neighboring building, he says:]

Oh. Is your leg bothering you? [Observant, but ignorant - that's Gansey. It seems he's keeping his weight off of one of them.] I hope the wait won't be too long in that case. Should we find somewhere to sit down first?

Huh? [ oh. is he that obvious right now? between the train ride over and now having to stand in line, he can feel the twinges of pain in his leg starting to get to him, but he figured he could tough it out for a little bit longer.

he can't fault Gansey for pointing it out of course, though admittedly the question does still bother him a little. ] I'm fine with just standin', but if you wanna sit somewhere that's cool too.

[Gansey smiles easily, worrying behind it that maybe he shouldn't have asked. Does Ryuji seem bothered, or is Gansey just worrying that Ryuji seems bothered?]

Suppose we'll sit when we make it into the restaurant, won't we?

[He'll keep an eye on Ryuji until that happens though. Just in case.]

[ shit, now Gansey probably thinks that he's annoyed with him. really Ryuji's more annoyed with himself for not masking as hard as he's used to. he nods. ]

Yeah man, I'm fine with that.

[ Ryuji peers out from behind his spot in line to see how much longer they potentially have, not too bad, but still a little way's to go it would seem. the anticipation's killing him though. so far and yet, still so far away. he can't help but grin when he turns to face Gansey again; probably more excited about the meal they're about to have than his "guest" is. he better stop thinking about it before he starts drooling though.

[ let's change the subject. what to ask though? ]

So, what made you wanna come to Tokyo?

[ that seems basic enough. he sure did pick a hell of a time to come here. ]

Ah. Well...[Gansey puts on a thoughtful expression, but it's no mystery really. He shrugs.] I have rather a lot of experience with European travel and the Americas, particularly North America, of course.

But I haven't explored much of the Asian countries. Tokyo wasn't my main reason for coming here, but I'd been told to make a visit. It's a vastly interesting city, of course. [Just not necessarily as spiritual as the more rural areas of any given place - decent libraries though, if only he could better read Japanese.]

Wait wait, hold up, for real? You came all the way here and you weren't gonna come to Tokyo?

[ there are places in Japan other than Tokyo, Ryuji... ]

So, whaddya here for? [ despite what his tone sounds like, he doesn't mean that in an accusatory way. he's just a bit surprised is all. ]

[Gansey smiles easily. Maybe he’s been waiting to ask - an excuse to talk about what he always wants to talk about deep down.]

I’m studying ley lines. They’re present all over the world, so I’d wondered if I could find any leads to those on island countries, if they’re present at all.

But there aren’t any in Tokyo, as far as I can tell.

[ a what now??? a...lay line?...lei...line? like a...conga line? ]

Oh, uh, yeah. I'm sure we've got plenty of those lyin' around here somewhere.

[ Ryuji laughs nervously, scratching the back of his head. should Ryuji know what those are, because he certainly doesn't. but Gansey says it like everyone know what a ley line is; and he says it so eagerly too, like he'd been waiting to talk to anyone about this. it'd probably be a real bummer if Ryuji 'fessed up and admitted he didn't know. so, not wanting to seem like a complete idiot, Ryuji meekly asks: ]

...What're those, again?

[ clearly he just needs a refresher on what a ley line is. ]

[Gansey, who is a.) quite used to people not knowing what ley lines are, and b.) perpetually eager to infodump about them, has absolutely no problem - and is, in fact, very excited - with Ryuji asking for clarification.]

Lines of supernatural energy that crisscross all over the world - all over the world, even over the oceans. And as old as the Earth itself.

Suppose I misspoke when I said I wondered if there would be any here - there certainly are. But currently I'm looking for convergences - that is to say, the points at which two lines cross over each other and meet. It creates a spectacular spike in energy, thereby - in theory - increasing the chances of experiencing the supernatural, encountering an entity, finding a mystical artifact even. They're often buried along ley lines, you know - what with how many cultures' practices involve them on a spiritual basis.

[He's rambling, and he cuts himself off with a laugh that's left breathless from all his talking.] It's, ah...Well, it's my life work. I'm never sorry to discuss it.

[He's little a unhinged as a treat.]

[ that was a lot more information than he was expecting, and it still doesn't exactly make sense to him. at the very least he can say he knows a little something about the supernatural, though he is admittedly a bit disappointed he's not actually talking about conga lines. ]

Ooohh, so you're lookin' for ghosts and shit? [ in ley-man's terms.

he does have to wonder how Gansey would react to a place like Mementos...not that Ryuji's considering how feasible it would be to take him to a place like that. that would be very reckless of him. ]

Well they say Japan's the land of 8 million spirits, soo maybe we can find some of these line thingies after we get done chowin' down!
